Sensors, belt, carriages and settings — the four places a fault usually sits
A door that opens on its own, over and over, is usually a sensor reading something it should not: a reflective floor, a banner moving in the draught, or a zone set too wide for the lobby it stands in. Re-aiming and re-zoning the sensor settles it without a single part.
A door that opens slowly, judders or stops halfway is usually mechanical. A stretched or glazed belt slips on the pulley, worn rollers drag in the track, and the operator compensates until it cannot. Belt and carriages are stock items and go in on the visit.
A door that will not respond at all points at power or the control unit, and that is where diagnosis matters most: the same symptom comes from a tripped supply, a failed sensor loop, or a board that has genuinely died.
When the board has failed, we say so plainly and quote the unit rather than selling a sequence of smaller repairs that were never going to hold. Where the operator is an obsolete model, we say that too, before you spend on it.

An automatic door has to stop for a person, every time
Every automatic door carries two kinds of sensor: the one that opens it when somebody approaches, and the one that stops it closing while somebody is still in the opening. The second is the one that keeps people safe, and it is the one nobody notices until it stops working.
A safety zone drifts out of adjustment quietly. The door keeps opening as it always did, so nothing looks wrong, while the strip that should hold it open has narrowed to the point where a slow-moving person is no longer inside it.
So the modes and the sensors are tested before we leave, with the door running: approach from both sides, a slow pass through the opening, the hold-open, and the manual release that has to work when the power does not.
Shops, offices, clinics and hotels each run the door differently — a clinic holds it open longer, a hotel lobby wants it quiet, a shop wants it quick — and the settings are matched to the building rather than left on the factory default.

Because the activation radar is seeing movement that is not a person: a banner or blind moving in the air-conditioning draught, reflections or headlights at night, rain on the lens, or an overlapping sensor from a neighbouring door. We re-aim the sensor, narrow its detection field and adjust sensitivity so it reacts to people on the approach and nothing else. If the sensor itself has failed, it is replaced.

A presence or safety sensor is being held active by something in the threshold: a new mat, a display stand, a reflective floor, condensation, or a sensitivity setting that is too high. Less often it is the hold-open time or a selector left on "open". What we repair on automatic doors
Automatic entrances fail in a predictable order. The sensors drift and clog first, the carriage wheels and the belt wear next, and the control electronics are usually the last thing to go. That order shapes how we work: clean and adjust before replacing, replace the worn part rather than the whole operator, and only talk about a new drive unit when the one you have has genuinely reached the end of its life. When a fault turns out to be a dead control board, we say so plainly and order the correct unit instead of guessing.
Activation, presence and safety sensors
The radar and infrared units above the door that see someone approaching, and the threshold and leaf-edge sensors that hold the door open while someone is standing in it and reverse the leaf if it meets an obstruction. We clean the lenses, re-aim them and re-set the detection field so the door opens for a customer on the approach, not for every passer-by on the pavement; safety sensors are tested with a person and a loaded trolley, and replaced when the unit itself is dead.
Operator, motor and gearbox
The drive in the header beam. A noisy gearbox, worn motor brushes, or an operator straining because the leaves drag. Serviced first; swapped only when the motor has actually failed.
Toothed belt, pulleys, carriages and track
The belt that pulls the leaves: stretched, frayed or slipping belts are re-tensioned or replaced, and loose clamps that let one leaf drift out of step with the other are re-set. Each leaf hangs from a carriage running in an aluminium track, so flat-spotted wheels, loose hanger bolts, worn anti-rise rollers and a grooved or gritty track produce judder, noise and leaves that sit crooked.
Floor guides, leaf balancing and alignment
The small guide at the bottom stops the leaf swinging in and out; once it wears, the leaf rattles in the wind and scrapes the threshold. Height, plumb, the gap at the meeting stiles and the overlap with the fixed sidelights are all set so two leaves close squarely and seal against each other.
Control unit, parameters and operating modes
Opening and closing speed, hold-open time, partial opening width, sensor sensitivity, lock and mode logic: re-programmed, re-taught after any mechanical work, and replaced when the board has failed. Modes cover open, automatic, exit-only, partial (the reduced "winter" opening) and locked, plus programme switches and key selectors that no longer respond, or doors stuck in a mode nobody chose.
Locks and battery back-up
The electromechanical lock that holds the leaves shut after hours, manual floor locks, and the back-up battery that should move the door to its safe position on a power cut.
Swing-door operators
Overhead operators with push or pull arms on single and double swing doors, low-energy push-button doors in clinics and offices, and the hinges and pivots that carry the leaf.
Seals, brushes and glass
Brush seals between the leaves and along the stiles, the floor sweep, and the weather strips that stop cooled air pouring out of the shop. Cracked or chipped toughened panes in leaves and sidelights are measured and replaced, with the leaf re-hung and re-balanced afterwards so the operator is not lifting a different weight than it was taught.
Common faults and what they usually mean
The door will not open at all
We start with the obvious, because the obvious is often the answer: the mode selector has been knocked to "locked" or "closed", the power supply or back-up battery has dropped out, or the after-hours lock has not released. Next comes the activation sensor, then the belt. A snapped belt or a jammed lock is a same-visit repair; a motor or control board that has stopped responding is diagnosed on the spot and the correct part is ordered.
The door will not close, or closes and springs back open
Something is keeping a presence sensor busy. Common culprits are a new floor mat or rug in the threshold, a plant or display stand moved into the detection zone, a polished floor reflecting the infrared beam, rain or condensation on the lens, or a sensitivity setting wound up too high. Sometimes it is simply the hold-open time set to a minute when it should be a few seconds, or a selector left on "open". We find the cause rather than turning the sensor down and calling it fixed, because a safety sensor that has been quietly disabled is a door that can close on a customer.
The door opens on its own
Radar sensors react to movement, and movement is not only people: a banner lifting in the air-conditioning draught, a blind swaying behind the glass, headlights and reflections at night, rain running down the pane, even a neighbouring automatic door whose sensor overlaps yours. We narrow and re-aim the detection field, adjust sensitivity and, where two units are cross-talking, separate their zones.
It judders, jerks or slams
Worn carriage wheels with flats on them, a track full of grit, a belt at the wrong tension, or a clamp slipping under load all make the leaves stutter. Slamming is usually a speed or braking parameter, sometimes the controller's obstruction detection set too coarse. Mechanical causes are fixed with new wheels, a cleaned track and correct tension; settings are then re-taught so the controller knows the leaf it is moving.
It squeaks, grinds or rattles
Dry or worn wheels and a rough track make the squeal; a worn floor guide or loose brush seal makes the rattle, especially in wind. Both are cheap to put right and both get worse if left, because the wheels eventually chew the track.
It reacts late, or only when you are almost at the glass
The detection field is aimed too close to the door, the lens is dirty, sensitivity is too low, or the opening speed has been turned down. Re-aiming and re-setting the sensor restores a door that opens on the approach.
One leaf has dropped, scrapes, or the two leaves no longer meet
Hanger bolts have loosened, a belt clamp has slipped, the anti-rise rollers are out of adjustment, or the floor guide has worn. We re-hang and re-balance both leaves, re-set the stile gap and run the learning cycle so the operator stops fighting a crooked door.
The swing door struggles, stops short or will not hold
On operated swing doors the usual cause is the hinge or pivot, not the operator: a leaf that has sagged drags, and the operator either stops short on its obstruction limit or strains until something gives. Re-hanging the leaf, tightening or replacing the arm linkage and re-setting closing force and latching speed usually sorts it.
Operating modes, safety sensors and what we test before leaving
Most automatic sliding doors carry five modes on a selector or key switch: fully open, automatic two-way, exit-only for after-hours, partial opening for hot days when you want less conditioned air lost, and locked. A surprising number of "broken door" calls are a selector knocked into the wrong mode, so we always check it first, show your staff where it sits and what each setting does, and leave the door in the mode you actually want. Safety is the part we refuse to shortcut: after every repair and every adjustment we test the reversing behaviour. A person stopping in the threshold must hold the door open, a leaf meeting an obstruction must stop and back off, and a swing leaf must not strike someone standing in its arc. Where the operator has a learning cycle, we run it after any change to weight, travel or tension so the force limits are set for the door as it is now, not as it was when installed. If a back-up battery is fitted, we check the door does what it is configured to do when the mains drops out.
When the electronics have failed: the honest version
Sensors, control boards and motors are specific to each make and model, and we would rather be clear than vague about what that means. We are not an authorised service partner of any automatic door manufacturer and do not present ourselves as one. What we do is diagnose properly: read fault codes where the controller gives them, test each sensor in turn, check supply voltages, and isolate whether the fault lies in a sensor, the wiring, the motor or the board itself. Mechanical wear and worn modules are repaired or replaced on the visit wherever parts allow. When the control unit is dead, or a sensor is a type we do not carry, we identify the exact model, order it and give you the lead time once the supplier confirms it rather than a hopeful guess. In the meantime the entrance is left in the safest usable state the hardware allows, most often secured shut with the manual lock overnight and opened by hand for trading, depending on the door. If the operator is old enough that its board is no longer made, we tell you that too, and set out the realistic choices instead of patching something that will fail again next month.
Shops, offices, clinics and hotels
Almost every automatic door we see is a business entrance, so the visit is planned around trading rather than the other way round: early mornings before a shop opens, evenings after a clinic closes, night slots for hotel lobbies where the entrance cannot be blocked during the day.
